what type are you?

This quiz from the mighty Pentagram has been cruising speedily around the interwebs, so if you’ve already done it, please share your type with us in the comments.

If you haven’t, turn your speakers on and go find out what type you are. Then come back and tell us. (Edited to add: password is Character)

I’m Van Doesburg. A creatively structural typeface designed by Theo Van Doesburg, an architect from the De Stijl era.

logorama

18 January 2010   //     1 comment   //   caught my eye, design, video

Logorama by H5 is an short animated film about a world made entirely of logos and trademarks. The Pringles man drives a truck, the green and red dots in the Stop & Shop logo are actually stop lights, and Microsoft butterflies flutter across the screen. The plot sounds like an LA shoot-em-up (between the Michelin man and Ronald MacDonald), and from a visual standpoint, I can’t wait to see it.

Check out the trailer here.
Information about the film here.

delurk

14 January 2010   //     9 comments   //   announcing, design

My friend Aimee Greeblemonkey told me today was National Delurking Day. This means that you — the person reading but not commenting on my many, witty, interesting posts — need to let me know you’re out there and say hi.

And since Aimee went to all the trouble to create that creepy flasher guy graphic above, I think it’s the least you could do to honor her (and Rude Cactus) and participate, right?

The thing is, although I love writing and finding cool things to share with you even if you just look and read and move on, it sure helps, once in a while, to know you’re out there. Plus, it helps me when I write to be able to picture the person reading. So I find myself “talking” to specific people when I write certain posts.

So do it! Delurk! Let me know you’re there. And maybe I’ll write my next post specifically to YOU! Lucky dog.

House Industries Valentype
Valentype

I love how plush and bursty this Valentype is from House Industries. The whole font looks just like that plump sumptuous heart. And it comes on 6×8 solid maple blocks. Yummy.

I’d like the whole red set please. It would look great in the LEAP office.

Found these on Kirtsy this week. Interesting, and sometimes beautiful, infographics related to Social Media.

Form? Check. Function? Check. I love it when information is well designed.

altitude design summit

I’m a little late, as usual, but I finally bought my tickets to the alt summit and I am so freakin excited!

Have you looked at the speaker list lately? Holy cow it just goes on and on and on with awesome. And I’m lucky enough to be speaking too! Moderating, actually. A panel about designing online and its inherent challenges. Where do we even begin?

The bloggers and designers and tastemakers that are coming to this conference kinda make my mouth hang open with awe, like the neighbor kid in The Incredibles watching Mr. Incredible pick up his car. I can’t believe I get to spend the weekend with these, um, incredible people. People whom I have admired from afar for years. People who haven’t yet had a forum created just for them. To talk about design. And designing. And pretty things. And cool design. And, holy moly, it’s going to be fantastic!

And bonus: conference registration includes a free ski pass to the gorgeous Solitude ski resort! I can’t wait to go boarding with you!

If you haven’t registered yet, it’s still not too late. Click here:

polaroid!

So I loved seeing the photos of all the cool CES gadgets flying around the internets all week. But this one made my jaw drop. Then I jumped out of my chair. New Polaroid cameras! That will work with Polaroid instant film!

Have you heard of The Impossible Project? If not, go to that link and read. And be sure to click through the pictures and read the captions. It’s an amazing story about how Polaroid Instant Film is being resurrected. The film is supposed to be available in February. I assume the cameras will be ready to go then too? Hope so!

(Thanks Electricpig for the news and the photos.)

Edited: The direct link to The Impossible Project wasn’t working when I first posted. But it appears to be back up now, so go!

Oh wow.

500 colored pencils. Delivered to you, in groups of 25, over the course of 20 months.

And bonus — they all have gorgeously evocative names, like “Drizzly Afternoon,” and “Tea with Milk,” and “Lemon Ghost.” Lemon Ghost, people. Don’t you just want to lick that?

Oh, and double bonus, they also have display cases that turn your collection into an art installation in its own right:

Brought to you by the fine folks at Social Designer. See the whole set here.

(Thanks Liquid Treat.)

mix tape usb hub

06 January 2010   //     0 comments   //   caught my eye, clever, design, vintage

When we moved from Durham to Charlotte a few years ago, we purged our world of hundreds of cassettes that we had either obtained digitally or which we were pretty certain we wouldn’t listen to again. This pretty much left us with a big box of mix tapes that we don’t listen to but would never in a million years get rid of. And as much as I love the convenience and portability of digital music, I do miss tapes and the way they rattle around and slide clattery into a tape deck.

But now, thanks to Urban Outfitters’ keen eye for kitch, you can keep a tape on your desk in the form of a USB hub!

Find it here.
